NYFW: Angel Sanchez Spring 2013 Collection

Last September it was a very exciting time for One Style at a Time. To have the great opportunity to attend and view Angel Sanchez 2013 Spring/Summer Collection. This Venezuelan charismatic and highly talented Fashion Designer presented a collection that brought elegance, vibrant colors and a great attention to detail. Angel Sanchez is known for his bridal collections, evening gowns and intricate design construction. The latter derives from his years as an architect before becoming a designer.

It was impressive to see him work the room with so much charm. He was all smiles as he spoke to the press and greeted all his guests and discussed his inspiration for this collection. On this occasion his inspiration was the work of a fellow Venezuelan, artist Rafael Barrios. Sanchez described the influence as, “A balance between precise lines and very geometric elements.” It was the perfect marriage of art meets fashion as the models wore gowns in organza fabric, details with embroideries and the right on trend, laser cutouts. This spring collection has all the elements of success and a sure fit for great red carpet moments. Celebrities that have walked the carpet in Sanchez pieces have been Eva Longoria, Taylor Swift, Brooke Shields and Sandra Bullock to name just a few.

NYFW: Farah Angsana Spring 2013 Collection

One of the first shows I had the pleasure of attending at Lincoln Center last September was by Farah Angsana. As the lights were dimmed and the music began to play, one by one the runway turned into a exotic paradise with an array of rich colors, prints and the dancing of chiffon’s, silks and organza fabrics. The crystal embellishments on some of these evening and cocktail gowns glittered and shined as the light bounced off the movement of the models. It is no surprise the designer named this collection, “The Glamazon”. Farah was inspired by her travels to Brazil. She further describes the woman that inspired this collection, “A woman who got caught up in a love that brought a new sense of herself. Blossoming into her thoughts and re-inventing her life in every way.”
Farah has been the first and only Indonesian designer to show a collection in Paris and completed her Fashion studies in London. Her specialty is bridal and couture. The influences are all there and they were certainly palpable in this lovely and elegant Spring/Summer Collection for 2013.

Top THREE Films to see in 2013

Happy New Year 2013 Fashionistas! Hope you had a safe and happy Holiday Season. Now that the confetti has settled and the new year noise makers have been put away we can begin our new year discussing Fashion and Films. As you know award season will be here before we click our heels three times. So One Style at a Time is kicking off the new year highlighting three very anticipated films for this year.

First, we begin with  “Gangster Squad” which opens January 11th (U.S.). This film stars the very dapper Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Sean Penn, Nick Nolte among others. It is quite a cast and the story is set in the 1940’s in Los Angeles. If you are a fan of gangster movies this is for you.  If you (like moi) are a fan of the fashion of the 40’s this will be right down your alley. Just take a look at a few of Emma Stone’s beautiful gowns, stunning makeup and hair from that era.
Costume Design: Mary Zophres

We fast forward to March 8th which is the release date of Disney’s Oz: The Great and Powerful.” This new story is a prequel to the one of the greatest films in history, “The Wizard of Oz” and stars James Franco as the great Wizard. The film tells the story of how Oscar Diggs, a circus Magician lands himself in the wonderful world of Oz. He then encounters three witches Mila Kunis as Theodora, Michelle Williams as Glinda and Rachel Weisz as Evanora. This film brings magic, a wonderful world of fantasy and beautiful costumes that will take you to a special and also mysterious place… over the rainbow.
Costume Design: Gary Jones
Finally, there is the film that so many have been anticipating for for quite some time, “The Great Gatsby”. This film opening on May 10th is an adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 classic novel and stars Leonardo DiCaprio as the lead role Jay Gatsby, Tobey McGuire and Carey Mulligan. The roaring twenties is when this period movie takes place and there is no shortage of glamour and amazing costumes. The leading men’s wardrobe is  the work of two-time Oscar-winning costume designer Catherine Martin and American fashion house Brooks Brothers. Miuccia Prada has reworked 40 dresses from the Prada and Miu Miu archives to create costumes for the ladies in this upcoming film.  A film for the classic bookworm and the Fashionistas.

So movie fans, which film are you looking forward to seeing most this year?

A graceful evening with Grace Coddington

It was a much anticipated evening at the Union Square Barnes and Noble in New York City. The arrival of Grace Coddington was as welcome as her latest book release “Grace, A Memoir”.  The crowds grew by the hour and once she arrived it was all eyes on this creative red headed force of nature.

Who is Grace Coddington you may ask? That’s easy to answer. Have you ever skimmed through an American Vogue Magazine and been captivated by some of the most beautiful, dreamy and narrative editorials? Then you are familiar with her impressive work. Her early start in Fashion began as a model, then she worked for 19 years as a photo editor at British Vogue. She has been the mastermind to the most spectacularly styled photo spreads at US Vogue since 1988, working closely with the most famous models, photographers and Anna Wintour of course. Grace left quite an impression in the 2007 Fashion documentary film “The September Issue” as the more sensitive yet outspoken fashion editor to Ms. Wintour.

Once Grace arrived with her assistant and Vogue staff at hand,  she quickly took a seat and answered questions from Vogue’s Features Director, Eve MacSweeney and also from the audience. Here are some of the highlights:

  • “I just think it is more fun when there are many more layers. I like to dream.” - When asked about her romantic photo shoots.
  • “The Parisians are chic and the British are absolutely not chic, they’re cool. I was a bit of both.” When talking about both styles.
  •  She recalled her days as a model in the 1960’s and how back then Models were expected to show up to photo shoots with their hair and makeup done and bring their own clothes, shoes and accessories to the set.
  • Her favorite shoot was the very famous “Alice in Wonderland” from 2003.
  • She is not a fan of twitter, social media, shows like Project Runway or Top Model.
  • She does not read emails, instead in very shy manner said that her assistant reviews all her emails and prints those that are of high importance.
  • “Perseverance, dream a bit, and just be passionate about it.” was her answer to what she considers the three keys to success.

Finally, I had my chance to meet and greet her and have my book signed. When I stepped up to the signing table I said, “Hello Grace. I think your next book should be a collection of some your runway sketches.” She responded with a smile, “Hmmm, they are actually not as good as my drawings from the book, I actually prefer caricatures. They add a little humor.”

I leave you with a few images from the lecture and book signing from this past Monday and some photos from a few of my favorite editorials from lady Grace.

HATS off to You this Fall/Winter

There is no doubt that the Fall-Winter season brings some of the best opportunities to dress up and show off your best sense of style. It’s a popular season for shoes, bags and accessories. As the season gets cooler, the colors get warmer and the layers begin to increase. Besides a great fashion scarf and gloves what else does a lady need to complete a great winter look? It starts from the top ladies, a great HAT!

Starting from the runway, designers like Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren and Marc Jacobs to name a few made strong statements in their Fall 2012 collections with hats. The equestrian style that is strongly trending with boots also includes hats. There was no shortage of textures and colors and the play on a masculine aesthetic is certainly a key look for this season. When looking for the right hat try on different styles to see what works best for your face shape and how this will compliment the look you are going for.  Hats come in many varieties and some you will see are: fedoras, beanies, cloche, wide brim felt hats, fur trimmed and wool/knit berets. Not only are hats a great way to stay warm in the cooler days ahead but even an option for a bad hair day. Here at One Style at a Time we are big fans of the hat accessory as it has remained a detail even in our blog banner. So we ask…With so many great hats in the market what will you chose? Is there a particular style that you gravitate to? Do you own a hat that you just love or have received compliments on in the past? We would love to hear all about it!

An American Fashion Favorite: Michael Kors

When it comes to a Fashion Designer who captures the spirit of the American design none other comes to mind than Michael Kors. Personally, I have not met a friend, relative or social media Fashion darling that does not own a piece of the Kors massive collection. I myself have been a fan for years. Frankly, how can you not be? Michael Kors is not just a designer, but a brand and a lifestyle. If you are looking for great quality, exceptional design with a classic and versatile style then Kors is your man!

Some of you may know him as the man behind the label, others may remember him as the sassy and no holds barred judge from the hit show “Project Runway”.  Michael was born Karl Anderson Jr. but by age five changed his name. He is from Long Island, New York,  was a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology and is a celebrity magnet when it comes to Fashion. He also designed Michelle Obama’s dress for her very first official portrait.

The Michael Kors brand is known for its flawless tailoring, timeless pieces of ready to wear, handbags, shoes, jewelry and accessories. Season after season he brings his touch of American glamour to his collections with detail, modernity and edge. He knows just how to enamor us with his style and we can’t get enough. Are you an owner of a Michael Kors piece? Do you have any favorites when it comes to handbags, clothes etc?

Click your Chunky Heels for Fall 2012

Bigger is better seems to be the recurring theme for Fall-Winter trends. Not only are the coats  getting a dose of the super sized treatment, but also the footwear. In past seasons we have seen enormously towering high heels some with very thin stilettos and others with some type of platform. This time the platform stays but is being combined with a wider, stacked heel.  Labels like Prada and Miu Miu showed a variety of thicker heeled shoes for their Autumn-Winter collections. It’s a 70’s inspired shoe that can be paired with many of the 60’s era short dresses found today or with your favorite longer skirt, a wrap dress, skinny jeans or leggings. The trick is to balance your look.

Chunky heels can be found in just about all price ranges, colors, and a variety of styles. From mary janes, pumps, booties, ankle strapped, and with patterns. So if you’re looking to give your feet a bit of style and a well deserved break from the very high heel, this trend may just be what the doctor and Fashioni metallics stas ordered. Here are some interesting options to inspire you before you head to your next shoe shopping excursion. I invite you to view the behind the scenes of Miu Miu’s Fall campaign and you will see the different types of chunky heels that has very well inspired so many brands to run with this trend. So I ask you my fashion darlings, how do you feel about this particular shoe trend? Are you a fan of a wider heel?
